Bringing the Charter to our Most Important Social Services Tribunal

Should the Charter of Rights and Freedoms play a role in decisions relating to income assistance benefits made by the Social Services Appeal Board? On May 5, 2017, legal counsel for the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) appeared before a five person panel of the Manitoba Court of Appeal seeking to overturn a 24 year old decision that had ruled that Charter values and Charter remedies could not be considered in income assistance appeals. PILC was representing Winnipeg Harvest, Inclusion Winnipeg and CMHA Winnipeg/Manitoba.
